Roots Down, Branches Out

Christ Church Jazz Choir are recruiting sopranos, tenors and baritones for the 2020 season. We are looking for talented soul/jazz singers who are confident ensemble singers and would like to gain more solo and ensemble performance experience. All applicants must be 16 years and over and committed to the choir’s role in improving community engagement and the musical worship experience in our Jazz Vespers.

Christ Church Jazz Choir leads the music at the monthly Christ Church Jazz Vespers, rehearsing and performing on the last Sunday of every month. The choir is accompanied by a professional jazz piano trio and directed by Rachel Maby. Alongside the Jazz Vespers duties, the choir also provides external performance opportunities, which most recently featured a Christmas concert at the V&A. To apply for an audition please complete an application form and email to Rachel Maby. Audition criteria will be as follows:

First round: Saturday 18th January 2020

15 minute audition on the afternoon of Saturday 17th January at Christ Church with Music Directors, Rachel Maby.

Applicants must prepare the following:  

  • a soul or jazz song no more than 3 minutes long, which shows off your vocal range, colour and ad lib ability (if any).
  • Your relevant vocal part to a set piece sent at least a week in advance.

*An accompanist will be provided. Applicants must bring two copies of the sheet music/lead sheet for their chosen piece. Music for the set piece will be provided. 

Second round: Sunday 26th January 2020

Upon a successful first round audition, singers will be invited to sing at Jazz Vespers with Christ Church Jazz Choir on Sunday 26th January This will include a rehearsal from 3.30pm, with the service running from 6.30-7.30pm. There will be a maximum of 8 musical items to learn, which will be sent a week in advance. Applicants must learn the music prior to rehearsal and performance.
